Financial capability support for migrant workers
In partnership with the Educational Guidance Service for Adults
Focus group members
Citizen’s Advice Bureau Belfast, First Steps Women’s Centre, Southern Regional College, South West College and Step Northern Ireland.
Aim
To help migrant workers on English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) learning courses identify possible sources of income, and gain a better understanding of basic employment law and state support benefits.
Background
Migrant employment is characterised by its temporary or seasonal nature and low wages. As a result, money worries are a common concern among these learners, and dropout rates from courses can often be attributed to financial difficulties.
Action
Focus group partners worked to originate, test and develop two teaching sessions to complement ESOL courses. The sessions provided an opportunity for learners to improve what they know about registering for employment, sources of financial support and benefits, and routes to education.
Outcome
Focus group members have created a package of two new, two-hour information sessions. They comprise a mix of formal teaching, group work and quizzes, and are suitable for learners at entry through to Level 2 standard. Support materials include a teacher’s workbook, DVD and student notes.
The session plans are aimed at ESOL practitioners helping migrant workers adjust to life in a new country. The vocabulary introduced through the sessions has a practical value and helps learners understand many of the real-life situations they experience.
Long-term expectations are that these resources can contribute to better retention rates among ESOL learners. The knowledge gained from the sessions increases feelings of inclusion and helps migrant workers better assimilate into society.
Testimonials
Joan McCool, Life Skills Co-ordinator, First Steps Women’s Centre, Dungannon
“Some of my ESOL students approached me with financial worries which could potentially have resulted in them withdrawing from their course. I wanted to be in a position to offer financial advice to ensure the retention of learners…any help in identifying sources of income can assist in improving quality of life and fulfilling career/study ambitions.”
Una Quinn ESOL teacher, South West College
“I have no hesitation in recommending this material to all ESOL teachers.”
